Designing a Backyard Experience
When Larry and Sandra first reached out to Easton Outdoors, they knew they wanted a water feature, but what they didn’t realize at the time was just how far the project would evolve.
What started as a relatively straightforward pond project quickly became something much bigger. Through multiple design meetings and revisions, the vision expanded from a simple backyard feature into a fully immersive outdoor experience built around movement, sound, and interaction with water.
Over the course of eight weeks and four separate design iterations, the project transformed dramatically. While the final installation itself took only about two weeks to complete, the planning and design process behind it was extensive. Each version pushed the project further, introducing larger features, stronger focal points, and more opportunities to make the space feel unique.
The final result became one of the most custom and technically involved water feature projects our team has completed in Poquoson.
Letting the Vision Grow
The original project budget started around $30,000. But as Larry and Sandra began seeing the possibilities, they decided they wanted to create something far more immersive and impactful.
Instead of scaling back, they leaned into the vision.
Additional water features were incorporated throughout the design, including three dramatic Stack Slate urns that now serve as major focal points within the space. Water cascades down the textured stone surfaces, creating both movement and sound throughout the yard. A scalloped urn and a 19-inch spillway bowl were also added to introduce softer water movement and layered visual interest.
One of the most unique additions was a 40-inch Terra Cotta patio bowl positioned near the seating area. This feature helped tie the water feature into the surrounding outdoor living space and added another interactive element guests naturally gravitate toward.
By the time the final design was approved, the project had evolved into a true backyard centerpiece.

Building Around Water
Creating a pond of this scale required much more than simply digging a hole and adding water. Every component underneath the surface had to work together to ensure proper circulation, filtration, and long-term performance.
To keep water moving efficiently throughout the pond and stream system, two high-powered 9000 GPH pumps were installed. These pumps support the large volume of water while maintaining the movement and sound that gives the pond its energy.
Two BioFalls filtration systems were integrated into the build to help naturally filter and maintain healthy water conditions for the fish and aquatic environment. Beneath the surface, intake bays with Aqua Blocks were installed to help manage debris and maintain proper water flow throughout the system.
The project also required two pump vaults and a large 25×50 liner system to ensure the pond remained watertight and structurally sound for years to come. While these components are rarely the most visually exciting part of a project, they are some of the most important. Strong infrastructure is what allows a custom pond like this to function reliably long after installation is complete.
To elevate the atmosphere even further, two misters were incorporated into the design, creating a fog-like effect that rolls across the water and gives the space an almost cinematic feel during cooler mornings and evenings.
Integrating Hardscape Into the Design
One of the goals for this project was making sure the pond felt connected to the rest of the property rather than isolated in one section of the yard.
To accomplish that, our team designed and installed a 220-square-foot paver walkway using **Belgard Brooklyn 3×9 pavers** in Midnight Black. The pavers were laid in a herringbone pattern, creating a clean, timeless look that complemented both the water feature and the home itself.
The walkway helps guide movement naturally through the space while visually tying the pond into the driveway and surrounding landscape.
A custom boulder bridge became another standout feature of the project. Rather than using a traditional bridge structure, large natural boulders were carefully placed to create a crossing point over the pond. The bridge gives visitors the ability to interact directly with the water below while adding a rugged, natural element that feels appropriate within the overall design.
The Stream That Changed Everything
One of the most transformative additions to the project was the 18-foot stream.
While the pond itself already created visual impact, the stream introduced movement and sound that completely changed the feel of the yard. Water now travels through the landscape instead of remaining confined to a single basin, making the entire backyard feel more alive.
The sound of moving water became one of the defining characteristics of the space. Instead of hearing traffic, neighboring activity, or silence, the homeowners now experience the constant, calming sound of flowing water every time they step outside.
The stream also helped connect the various water features together into one cohesive system rather than a collection of separate elements.
Challenges Along the Way
One of the biggest challenges with this project was balancing creativity with infrastructure. As the design evolved and new features were added, every adjustment required reevaluating water flow, filtration demands, elevation changes, and structural support.
Large custom water features require careful planning beneath the surface. Adding more visual elements often means expanding the hidden systems that support them. Pump sizing, filtration capacity, intake management, liner protection, and water circulation all had to scale with the growing vision.
The compressed installation timeline added another layer of complexity. Although the planning process stretched across several weeks, the final build itself moved quickly, requiring tight coordination between excavation, plumbing, stone placement, hardscape work, and finish detailing.
Every phase had to align correctly to bring the final vision to life.
The Finished Result
By the time the project was complete, Larry and Sandra’s backyard had been transformed into something far beyond the original concept. What began as a pond project became a layered outdoor experience filled with movement, sound, lighting, texture, and interaction.
The combination of custom water features, flowing stream elements, integrated hardscape, and natural stone created a space that feels immersive from every angle. Whether standing on the boulder bridge, listening to water cascade from the urns, or watching mist roll across the pond in the early morning, every part of the design was built to create an experience rather than just a feature.
At approximately $80,000, this Poquoson project is a perfect example of how outdoor spaces can evolve when homeowners fully embrace the possibilities of custom design.
