Creating a Destination on the Water
Waterfront properties often come with incredible views, but they don’t always come with great places to enjoy them.
That was exactly the challenge with this Poquoson backyard. The property overlooked the water, but the usable space was limited by wetlands, leaving a long, narrow footprint that wasn’t easy to design around. An aging wooden playset occupied one of the few areas where an outdoor living space could realistically be built, and while the homeowners enjoyed spending time outside, they didn’t have a place that truly invited them to stay.
Rather than trying to fill every square foot of the backyard, we focused on creating one destination: a cozy fire pit retreat that would completely change the way they experienced their waterfront property.
Designing Around the Way They Live
Every great outdoor space begins with understanding how the homeowners want to use it.
For this family, the goal wasn’t adding more features. They wanted to elevate their backyard and create a space that felt intentional—a place to gather with family and friends, enjoy cool evenings by the fire, and take advantage of the waterfront setting they already loved.
The old playset had served its purpose over the years, but as life changed, so did the way they wanted to use their yard. By removing the playset and building within its footprint, we transformed a forgotten corner of the property into one of its most inviting destinations.
Sometimes the biggest transformation isn’t expanding the space—it’s reimagining how it’s used.
Making the Most of a Challenging Site
Designing for waterfront properties often means working within limitations.
Wetland restrictions meant every square foot mattered. The patio needed to feel spacious without extending beyond the available buildable area, and every element had to earn its place within the design.
The finished patio covers approximately 302 square feet, but thoughtful planning makes it feel much larger than its footprint suggests.
The front portion of the patio was constructed using Techo Bloc Blu60 pavers in Shale Grey, creating a clean, modern approach to the space. As you move toward the fire pit, the design transitions into a circular inlay built with Techo Bloc Antika pavers, creating a natural gathering area that immediately draws your attention.
A Villagio border in Onyx frames the patio and ties the entire design together, adding definition without distracting from the waterfront views beyond.
Details That Tell a Story
One of the things that makes this project truly unique isn’t something you’ll notice at first glance.
Integrated into the circular patio are custom fish-shaped paver inlays—a subtle detail inspired by the property’s waterfront location.
Rather than relying on bold decorative elements, these inlays quietly reinforce the character of the space. They’re the kind of detail guests often discover after spending time around the fire, adding a personal touch that reflects both the setting and the homeowners’ lifestyle.
It’s a small feature, but it’s exactly these thoughtful details that turn a beautiful patio into a space with personality.
A Fire Pit Built for Everyday Enjoyment
At the heart of the patio sits a custom fire feature designed to be both beautiful and practical.
The fire pit was constructed using Borealis pavers, whose wood-look texture brings warmth and character to the design while offering the durability needed for a waterfront environment.
Inside, a Woodland Direct gas burner paired with black lava rock provides the convenience of instant ignition with a bold, natural-looking flame. There’s no hauling firewood, no waiting for logs to catch, and no cleanup afterward, just the simple enjoyment of gathering around a fire whenever the mood strikes.
Behind the fire pit, a Mini-Creta seating wall creates additional seating without crowding the patio with extra furniture, helping the compact space comfortably accommodate family and guests.
Finishing the Space
The final layer of the project focused on creating atmosphere.
Natural boulders were strategically placed around the patio to help anchor it within the landscape and reinforce the property’s coastal character. Low-voltage landscape lighting extends the usability of the space into the evening while highlighting the textures of the pavers, walls, and surrounding landscape.
Together, these finishing touches create a backyard that feels tucked away and inviting, especially after sunset, when the glow of the fire and landscape lighting transform the patio into a quiet waterfront retreat.
The Finished Result
By the time construction was complete, this Poquoson backyard had become much more than a place for a fire pit. It had become a destination.
What was once occupied by an unused playset is now a gathering space where family and friends can relax, enjoy the waterfront, and spend evenings together around the fire. Every detail—from the custom fish inlays to the carefully framed views—was designed to make the space feel intentional without overwhelming the natural beauty of the property.
This project is proof that you don’t need a massive backyard to create something extraordinary. Sometimes the most successful outdoor spaces come from focusing on one area and designing it exceptionally well.
