Materials: Techo Bloc Blu60 and BluGrande pavers, 60 tons of gravel base, wood pergola, exterior lights, plants, PVC fencing, and extensive drainage components.
When we stepped foot in this Hampton Roads backyard, it was clear the outdoor spaces hadn’t been updated in decades. The old pavers were crumbling, landscaping had become overgrown, and the driveway was too narrow to comfortably fit two cars side by side. The homeowners found themselves at a crossroads — after more than 30 years in the house and with their children now grown, they could either sell and start fresh or invest in a transformation that would make this home feel new again. They chose to stay, and they chose to dream big.
This project wasn’t just about replacing old materials; it was about reimagining the way the space functioned. Privacy was a major concern, especially in the backyard where a neighbor’s kitchen window looked directly into the yard. Additionally, the space had persistent drainage issues that limited its usability and comfort. Our team’s goal was to address these problems at their roots, design an outdoor environment that served multiple purposes, and build it to last.
Because projects like this are common for homeowners throughout Hampton Roads who are debating whether to move or renovate, we documented the full design process and step-by-step construction in more detail on our blog. If you’re curious how a large-scale outdoor living transformation comes together, those posts give a deeper look behind the scenes.
The first phase of the project involved clearing everything out. Old pavers, worn fencing, and overgrown plantings were removed to make way for a fresh start. Once the site was cleared, careful excavation began so a strong foundation could be built, a step that’s critical for long-term performance but often overlooked in lesser projects.
With the old elements out of the way, we laid roughly 60 tons of gravel as the base for all hardscape areas, ensuring stable, long-lasting support for the finished surfaces. The main patio, walkways, front driveway, and landing areas were paved using high-quality **Techo Bloc** materials. The main patio and pathways featured **Blu60** pavers in *Shale Grey* with an *Onyx* border, while the pergola’s interior used **BluGrande** pavers at a 45-degree angle to create visual interest and upscale appeal.
One of the most transformative features of the yard is the custom 14’×14’ wood pergola. We installed this heavy timber structure not only as a shaded gathering spot, but as a true outdoor “room” where the homeowners could relax year-round. This space was designed for comfort — in fact, the couple later shared how much they love sitting under the pergola during a rainstorm, listening to the soothing sound on the roof.
A new patio underneath the pergola, a lower patio space, and a cozy landing area connected by stone steps expanded the usable space and anchored the yard’s layout. New steps and walkways guide movement between the front and back, making the entire property feel cohesive and intentional rather than a collection of disconnected areas.
This project wasn’t without its challenges. The yard’s original grading directed water toward the house in several places, risking erosion and long-term issues. To fix this, we installed over 260 linear feet of drainage solutions, including a dedicated drain box for HVAC condensation lines. These improvements addressed the underlying water issues rather than just masking the symptoms, setting the stage for a more resilient landscape.
Privacy was also at the forefront of the design. Along the new PVC fencing, we planted Emerald Green Arborvitae, which not only screens views from neighbors but will continue to grow and fill in over time, enhancing the backyard’s sense of enclosure and comfort.
Thoughtful landscaping rounded out the transformation. Fresh beds and well-placed plantings softened hardscape edges and framed key areas of the yard, helping the space feel intentional and inviting. Aluminum edging defined garden beds, and river rock near the pergola minimized mud splatter while adding a textural contrast to the pavers.
To make the space enjoyable in the evening, we installed 22 lights strategically throughout the yard, highlighting key features and creating ambiance long after the sun went down.
One of the most talked-about features of this yard wasn’t in the original plan — a vintage ship anchor. While browsing for décor, we found an old anchor with history and character from a local seller. After securing permission to install it, the anchor was nestled into the landscape and quickly became a favorite focal point for the homeowners and their guests. So much so that friends now refer to the pergola space as “The Anchor Bar.” This piece doesn’t just decorate the yard, it tells a story and connects the space to local maritime heritage.
By the time the project wrapped, the former tired and underused yard had become a functional, beautiful extension of the home. From expanded outdoor living spaces and improved privacy to thoughtful grading and drainage solutions, this transformation checked every box on the homeowner’s wish list — and then some. Whether enjoying a morning coffee under the pergola, hosting friends at “The Anchor Bar,” or simply walking out the door and breathing in fresh air, this family now has an outdoor space that truly fits their lifestyle.
Large outdoor renovations like this don’t happen overnight. From initial walkthrough and budgeting to drainage solutions and final lighting placement, there are dozens of decisions that shape the outcome.
