16 Jan How We Designed and Built the Ultimate Outdoor Space (Mystery Marketplace, Ep. 3)
Have you ever watched an HGTV show and thought, “Well, that was way too easy”? In this blog, we’re giving you an unscripted, behind-the-scenes look at what it really takes to create a stunning backyard transformation. We’ll cover the entire build process, challenges, and even some surprises along the way.
This project centered around creating a functional and private oasis for Sharon and her husband. While Sharon dreamed of a backyard that felt like an extension of their home, her husband had two main priorities: improved drainage and privacy. With their wishlist in mind, we got to work.
Tackling a Yard in Decline
This wasn’t your typical blank canvas. The backyard had seen better days, with overgrown plants, dilapidated pavers, and an overall lack of functionality and visual appeal. Even more problematic was the lack of privacy; their neighbors’ kitchen window looked directly into the yard.
Our first step? A total reset. We removed the old pavers, dismantled the worn-out fence, and cleared overgrown landscaping to prepare for a fresh start. The design needed to address drainage issues, improve privacy, and deliver a beautiful, functional space.

Creating a Dream Backyard
The Materials
Pavers: We used 1,603 square feet of Techo Bloc materials to create stunning pathways and patios. The main patio featured Blu60 pavers in Shale Grey, bordered by Blu60 6”x13” pavers in Onyx. The pavilion’s interior was done in BluGrande pavers at a 45-degree angle to give the space a unique, upscale look.
Gravel: 60 tons of gravel formed the foundation for the hardscape.
Pergola: Constructed with 2,500 pounds of wood, this 14’x14’ structure became the centerpiece of the backyard.
Lighting: 22 strategically placed lights highlighted the yard’s best features while creating an inviting ambiance.
Landscaping: Emerald Green Arborvitae added a lush, natural privacy screen.
Fencing: PVC fencing provided a clean, modern look while improving privacy.
Key Features
Patios and Walkways: We rebuilt the front walkway, side patio, and driveway using Techo Bloc’s Eva pavers to ensure a cohesive look. In the backyard, a large lower patio and a cozy landing area connected by new steps created multiple destinations within the yard.
Pergola and Pavilion: The pergola added much-needed privacy while doubling as a new outdoor “room” where Sharon and her husband could relax year-round. The sound of rain on the pergola’s roof even became one of their favorite features.
Drainage Solutions: To tackle the yard’s drainage problems, we installed 260 linear feet of drainage systems, including a new drain box for HVAC condensation lines.
Landscaping: Along the PVC fence, we planted Emerald Green Arborvitae. These trees will grow taller and fuller over time, providing a natural, green barrier. We also incorporated aluminum edging around flower beds and used river rock near the pergola to prevent mud splatter.
The Anchor: As a nod to the local area’s maritime history, we added a vintage anchor that we found from a local seller. Initially met with some hesitation, this unique piece has become a beloved focal point of the backyard, inspiring the name “The Anchor Bar.”

A One-of-a-Kind Feature: The Anchor’s Story
The anchor was a special addition to the project—one we hadn’t planned for at first. During the course of the renovation, we stumbled upon an incredible old ship anchor listed for sale. It wasn’t just any anchor; this one had history, rust, and a patina that gave it undeniable character. The seller shared the fascinating backstory.
While working a job here in Poquoson, he’d come across the anchor at a client’s home. The homeowner had wanted it gone—ready to toss it out—but the seller knew it was far too unique to throw away. The homeowner told him that if he could remove the massive thing, he could have it! He reached out to the Mariner’s Museum, and they estimated the anchor was at least 75 years old. After hauling it around in the back of his truck for a year, he knew it was time for it to find a proper home.
He listed it for $400, calling it a one-of-a-kind piece. After a bit of friendly negotiation, we snagged it for $300 and knew it would become the perfect focal point for Sharon’s backyard.
When we asked for permission to install the anchor, we could tell there was a bit of hesitation. But once it was nestled into the landscaping, framed by fresh mulch and flowers, her skepticism turned into admiration. Now, it’s not just a yard decoration—it’s a story, a conversation starter, and a piece of history that’s found its forever home.

The Final Walkthrough Q&A
After weeks of hard work, it was time to walk through the finished yard with Sharon. Here’s what she had to say:
Q: Do you feel like you’re more drawn to coming outside now?
A: Yes! When I’m inside, I just sit and stare out the window because I can’t believe how beautiful it is.
Q: What do you think about the anchor?
A: Love it. And so do all of our friends and family. Shockingly, it’s one of the most talked-about features. Everyone’s even calling the bar “The Anchor Bar.”
Q: What’s your favorite feature?
The Project Cost
The original budget for the project was $106,390, split between the front and back yards. As the project evolved, the final cost came to $112,037. Here’s a breakdown:
- Pavers (1,603 sq. ft.): $48,490
- Two paver landings: $10,077
- Pergola: $17,560
- Lighting (22 fixtures): $6,600
- Drainage (260 linear feet): $5,370
- Landscaping (front and rear): $15,075
