Finding the Right Idea
Some outdoor projects begin with a drainage issue, a lack of seating, or an outdated patio. This one started with something less tangible.
For more than a year, the homeowner knew he wanted to improve his backyard, but every idea felt incomplete.
The yard wasn’t unusable, and it wasn’t unattractive. It simply lacked a reason to spend time there. Nothing felt exciting enough to justify making a change.
When we first began discussing the project, it became clear that the solution wasn’t going to come from adding more features. Instead, it would come from understanding how the homeowner wanted to experience the space.
That conversation led us to a surprisingly simple answer.
A swing.
Once that idea surfaced, the entire project started to take shape.
Designing Around the View
Located along the water, this backyard already had one incredible feature that couldn’t be improved upon: the view.
Rather than competing with it, the design needed to celebrate it.
The homeowner already enjoyed spending evenings around a small fire pit area, but the setup felt temporary. Adirondack chairs sat directly on the grass, and the space lacked the comfort and permanence found elsewhere on the property. The goal became creating a destination that felt intentional while maintaining the relaxed coastal atmosphere of the yard.
Every design decision was made with that objective in mind.
The pergola was carefully positioned to frame the waterfront view rather than block it. From inside the home, it creates a visual focal point that naturally draws your eye toward the water. Once seated beneath it, the structure provides just enough definition to make the space feel like an outdoor room while still remaining open to the surroundings.
The swing became the centerpiece of the entire design. More than just a seat, it gave the project a purpose and created a place where the homeowner could slow down, relax, and enjoy the view that made the property special in the first place.
Building for a Waterfront Environment
One of the biggest challenges with this project was the location itself.
This portion of the property regularly experiences tidal flooding and periodic standing water. Any improvements had to withstand those conditions while remaining easy to maintain over time.
Instead of creating a complicated design with multiple levels and unnecessary features, we focused on durability and simplicity.
The result was a raised 14-foot by 14-foot patio that feels substantial without overwhelming the space. Elevating the patio helps define the gathering area while providing a durable surface that performs well in a challenging waterfront environment.
Because maintenance was a concern, the homeowner wanted the warmth of wood without the upkeep that comes with traditional decking. To achieve that look, we installed Techo Bloc Borealis pavers in Smoked Pine. The wood-look pavers deliver the character and texture of natural wood while offering the durability and longevity of concrete pavers.
Small Details That Make a Big Difference
One of the reasons this project feels so inviting is that every detail was considered.
The Borealis pavers were installed on an angle, creating subtle movement throughout the space and naturally guiding visitors toward the water. It’s a small design choice that many people don’t consciously notice, but it helps the patio feel connected to the surrounding landscape.
A low Mini Creta wall was installed along the edge of the landscape. Rather than acting as a barrier, the wall serves as a frame for the space. It helps define the patio without interrupting the view, allowing the water to remain the star of the show.
Natural boulders were incorporated throughout the landscape to add texture and reinforce the coastal character of the property. Simple plantings soften the hardscape and provide year-round interest without requiring extensive maintenance.
To extend the enjoyment of the space into the evening hours, core-drilled lighting was installed directly into the patio. The warm glow highlights the paver pattern at night while creating a welcoming atmosphere for gatherings around the fire pit.
A Space That Feels Like an Escape
One of the most rewarding aspects of this project is how much was accomplished without making the space feel crowded.
There is no outdoor kitchen. No oversized entertainment area. No unnecessary features competing for attention.
Instead, the design focuses on a few elements done exceptionally well.
The pergola creates structure. The swing creates purpose. The patio creates comfort. And the view provides everything else.
Sometimes the best outdoor spaces aren’t the biggest or the most expensive. They’re the ones designed around the way people actually want to spend their time.
The Finished Result
When the project was complete, the homeowner gained much more than a new patio. What was once a simple fire pit area became a true waterfront retreat — a place designed to encourage relaxation, conversation, and appreciation of the landscape beyond it.
The combination of the wood-look pavers, carefully positioned pergola, integrated lighting, and coastal-inspired details transformed an underutilized corner of the yard into one of the property’s most inviting destinations.
At just under $30,000, this Hampton Roads project demonstrates how thoughtful design can completely change the way an outdoor space feels without requiring a massive footprint or a long list of features. By focusing on one strong idea and building around it, we created a backyard that feels intentional, personal, and perfectly connected to its surroundings.
