How Does Your Backyard Sound?

As much as we love how our projects look, one often-overlooked component is that sound that a water feature can  create in a backyard. Just close your eyes and listen to the sound of flowing water, then imagine what it would be like to hear that every time you open your back door. It’s one big component of our desire to allow people to live life outdoors!

For this Williamsburg home, we were working to create two separate spaces for enjoyment. There was already a fire pit with a seating wall, but the flow of the yard wasn’t quite right, and we had to add a water feature as well. Here’s how we made the transformation.

Before we started working, we needed to fix the deck area, which was originally blocked off and made for an awkward flow from one space to the next. We corrected this problem and re-built the stairs, which are now wide enough they can double as a seating area. Then we added some stepping stones to lead straight over to the fire pit area, and as a finishing touch we used landscaping – with cryptomaria, arborvide, forsythia, hydrangeas – to add a little privacy and a lot of floral beauty to the space.

Finally, to fill the yard with the sound of flowing water, we created a water feature complete with a pondless waterfall, a sphere built on Aqua-Blocs, and lights that will make the trees come to life at night. Watch the video and scroll through our photos to see just how it turned out!
