07 Jan Our Top 10 Backyard Transformations for 2024
As we reflect on the year, we’re excited to share 10 of our favorite projects with you—each one unique and special in its own way. From grand transformations to small but meaningful updates, these projects showcase the heart and joy of getting outside. Whether it’s a backyard oasis, a simple walkway, or a custom feature that brings a space to life, these jobs remind us how every outdoor space can offer a new experience and a place to enjoy the great outdoors. We’re thrilled to share these moments with you and hope they inspire you to get outside and make the most of your own space!
1. A Constellation of Elegance
Some projects are all about the details, and this backyard was one of those. The yard already had a stamped concrete pool deck, but the layout felt awkward and lacked the charm the homeowners were looking for. That’s where we came in, with a vision to transform their space into something truly unique.
We started by adding a 614-square-foot paver patio using Techo Bloc’s Blu60 Smooth pavers in the color Champlain Grey. This created a seamless flow between the old pool deck and the new additions. But the highlight? The constellation walkways. These unique paths, made with Techo Bloc Villagio pavers in Black Onyx, feature curves and swirls reminiscent of celestial patterns. In-Lite paver lights were embedded to mimic constellations, giving the walkways a magical, otherworldly glow at night.
To make the space even more inviting, we built a large pergola, setting the stage for a brand-new outdoor kitchen. We also added a breathtaking water feature with a patio bowl, scalloped urn, stacked slate urn, and a Fire and Water stacked slate sphere. Mrs. Bella’s keen eye for design helped us create a feature full of dimension, beauty, and flair.
Cost: $153,830
First impressions matter, and for this family, the front yard wasn’t living up to the charm of their home. The builder-grade landscaping was uninspiring, and drainage issues made the space less functional. We started by reworking the drainage system and adding vibrant plants to rejuvenate the area.
The centerpiece of this transformation is the stunning pondless water feature in the middle of the circular driveway. Three stacked slate spheres create a cascading effect, surrounded by Elephant Ear, Creeping Jenny, and Mexican Petunia for a splash of color. Large boulders and two tons of grey chalet stone give the feature a natural, grounded look. Now, every time they pull into their driveway, they’re greeted by the soothing sound of water and a visually striking landscape.

3. A Full-Scale Transformation
When this family debated moving versus renovating, they chose to stay and invest in creating their dream outdoor space. We started by addressing their outdated patio, driveway, and walkways, along with persistent drainage problems.
In the front yard, we replaced the old driveway with 437 square feet of Techo Bloc Eva pavers in Shale Grey, bordered by Villagio pavers. A new walkway in Onyx Villagio pavers added elegance and functionality. The backyard saw an even more dramatic change. A 600-square-foot Techo Bloc Blu60 patio, complemented by a 196-square-foot BluGrande inlay, became the new centerpiece.
A 14×14 pergola with a polycarbonate roof and shadow box privacy walls transformed the space into an inviting retreat. A custom shadow box wall with a bar topper added functionality, while fresh landscaping and lighting completed the look. And to make this space easily accessible, we added a backdoor with a paver landing which completely transformed the way they interacted with their yard.

4. Poolside Pond Paradise
Already boasting a pool and an expansive backyard, this family wanted to tackle the slope and underutilized space in their yard. Our challenge? Incorporating a pond while expanding the pool deck to create a cohesive, functional design.
We built a stunning 10’x14’ pond with a 6-foot stream, accompanied by 180 square feet of Techo Bloc Villagio pavers in Champlain Grey. A curved retaining wall with built-in boulders added both structure and natural charm, providing seating near the pond. New landscaping and lighting brought the entire area to life, making it an oasis for the family and a favorite spot for the grandkids.
Cost: $38,800
For this family, their corner lot backyard was a multi-year labor of love. The result? A personal oasis that combines comfort, functionality, and luxury.
In phase one, they added a custom deck and pergola, followed by a metal-roofed pavilion featuring a two-level bar and an outdoor kitchen. Techo Bloc Blu60 Smooth pavers in Shale Grey, with Onyx Black edging, tied the design together. A gas fireplace added warmth and ambiance.
Phase two took things to the next level with a 7×13 heated plunge pool from Soake Pools. A 48-inch waterfall gently flows into the pool, surrounded by lush landscaping and Techo Bloc York caps in Shale Grey. The entire space now feels complete, providing a private retreat for relaxation and entertainment.
Cost: $276,000
What started as a small pondless waterfall for these homeowners evolved into a one-of-a-kind front yard feature. Inspired by our display pond, the design wraps around their porch, creating a serene setting perfect for unwinding.
The centerpiece is a pond with two main sections: a 10’x18’ area and a larger 18’x20’ section with a deep zone for fish. A boulder bridge connects the two areas, adding a whimsical touch. The larger section features a fountainscape with three illuminated urns, while an 18-foot stream with a spillway bowl adds extra charm.
We completed the look with a Belgard Brooklyn paver walkway in Midnight and strategic landscaping. The result is a magical space that looks equally stunning day and night.

This project was all about versatility, turning a blank slate into a backyard that fits Kim and Matt’s lifestyle. We designed a multi-functional space that lets them enjoy the outdoors all year long.
The transformation included a 575-square-foot patio divided into three zones:
- A 13×13-foot fire pit area for cozy evenings.
- A 13×20-foot patio with a pergola, offering shaded dining and relaxation.
- A stylish paver landing by the back door, perfect for morning coffee or evening cocktails.
To tie the space together, we used Techo Bloc Blu Grande pavers in Shale Grey with a six-inch border. Understanding their needs was key:
- They love grilling but prefer to eat indoors, so the grill was placed close to the house.
- They enjoy simple fire pit nights, so a portable fire pit fit the bill.
- Shade was a priority, leading us to position the pergola near the fence as a focal point.
A small, swampy yard that turned into a muddy mess with every rainfall wasn’t working for this family—or their dogs. The solution? A functional, low-maintenance outdoor space.
We started by tackling drainage issues, routing all the downspouts and even the HVAC condensation line out of the yard. Then, we built a 100-square-foot Belgard London Cobble paver patio with a unique curved shape, perfect for a fire pit and chairs. To keep the pups happy and mud-free, we installed 220 square feet of artificial turf. The result is a clean, usable space that balances practicality and style, proving you can love the outdoors and still opt for turf!
Cost: $12,260
Tight spaces and zoning challenges couldn’t stop this Virginia Beach family from creating a backyard retreat that’s both functional and luxurious.
We swapped their big pool dreams for a stunning Soake Pool—a fully automated, chemical-free garden tub with WiFi controls, electric heating, and UV filtration. Surrounding it is a 300-square-foot patio featuring Techo Bloc Villagio pavers in Champlain Grey with a Greyed Nickel inlay.
Highlights include:
- Lush landscaping with hydrangeas, hostas, and other greenery.
- A custom water feature with basalt columns, water walls, and a playful spitting fish.
- A modern Lumi Fire Bowl and ambient lighting for evening relaxation.
- Artificial turf, offering a low-maintenance green backdrop year-round.
Partnering with GC Commercial, we helped create Old Dominion University’s new National Pan-Hellenic Council Monument Plaza. This space celebrates historically Black fraternities and sororities while providing a gathering area for students and alumni.
We installed 4,300 square feet of pavers, including walkways surrounding the central monument. Built to handle heavy foot traffic, the foundation includes a 6-inch crusher run base, 4 inches of reinforced concrete, and a 2-inch sand screed. Partnering with Interlock Pavers, we completed the project just in time for homecoming. The monuments themselves are the highlight, standing as a lasting tribute to ODU’s NPHC members and their legacy.
Cost: $126,860
