Creating the Perfect Outdoor Space in Glen Allen, VA (Mystery Marketplace, Ep. 1)

Ever wondered how a seemingly ordinary backyard can be transformed into a stunning outdoor oasis? Our latest project in Glen Allen, VA, did just that. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how we turned a regular yard into a versatile outdoor haven, with a little twist involving Facebook Marketplace and a touch of creativity.

The Project: A Multifaceted Outdoor Retreat

The vision for this project was to create a versatile outdoor space for Kim and Matt, transforming their backyard into a multi-functional area that would cater to their needs and style preferences. The plan included a 575 square-foot patio, divided into three distinct zones:

      1. A 13×13 Foot Fire Pit Area: Designed for cozy evenings around the fire.
      2. A 13×20 Foot Patio with Pergola: A shaded dining area to enjoy meals outdoors.
      3. A Charming Landing Right Off the Back Door: A space for relaxation and a warm cup of coffee (or a nice cocktail, that works too!)

To connect these areas seamlessly, we used Techo Bloc’s Blu60 pavers throughout the entire patio, and Techo Bloc’s Blu Grande pavers in shale gray for the stepping stones. This choice was intentional to create a cohesive look while defining each space. We also incorporated a six-inch shale gray border along the patio to further delineate the areas and enhance the visual appeal.

Overcoming Logistical Challenges

One of the most significant challenges of this project was transporting 81,000 pounds of gravel from Hampton Roads to Glen Allen. Given that this was a substantial distance, we had to find an efficient solution to ensure timely delivery. After some negotiation and a little persuasive charm with our friends at Mercury Mulch, we secured their help to transport the gravel. A warm breakfast and a good bottle of bourbon did the trick!

Micah's Unique Twist: A Facebook Marketplace Find

While our team worked on-site, Micah took on a unique challenge—finding a special item from Facebook Marketplace to integrate into the design. His goal was to find an object that resonated with Kim and Matt’s personality and added a unique touch to the space.

Micah came across an antique tea lantern owned by Erin, a local seller with a heartfelt story. Erin’s lantern, a cast-iron pagoda adorned with ivy, was intended to mark her driveway as a symbol of home. Due to personal financial difficulties, Erin was selling the lantern to manage her debt. Micah was moved by her story and decided to purchase the lantern at its listed price, despite initially planning to negotiate. The lantern was to be incorporated into the new design, fulfilling Erin’s wish for it to be a beacon of home.

Designing the Perfect Outdoor Space

Understanding Kim and Matt’s lifestyle was crucial to crafting a design that would meet their needs and preferences. Through a series of detailed questions, we learned that:

      • They love grilling but prefer to eat indoors, which meant an outdoor kitchen wasn’t necessary. The design needed to keep the grill close to the house for easy indoor access.
      • They enjoy fire pit nights, but didn’t need anything elaborate – a portable fire pit would suffice.
      •  They dislike being hot (same), so shade was a priority.

Based on these insights, we decided to:

      • Position the pergola towards the back of the yard near the fence. This placement would create a visually appealing destination that could be seen from inside the house, enticing them to enjoy the outdoor space more often.
      • Design a modern, clean look with simple lines and minimalist features. We suggested adding a maple tree in the center of the space for future shade and visual interest.

We also convinced Kim and Matt to upgrade their wooden steps to a stylish paver landing! This new landing was designed to accommodate a small table and chairs, providing a cozy spot for morning coffee or evening cocktails. The wide steps also offered additional seating, making it perfect for gatherings with friends and family.

Landscaping and Final Touches

With the design in place, our team focused on the landscaping. The area around the patio was meticulously prepared and planted:

      • Moonrock Hydrangeas were installed along the back fence. These hydrangeas have a unique appearance, similar to limelight hydrangeas, but with a distinct shape.
      • Green Giant Arborvitaes were placed in the back corners for privacy and greenery.
      • Russian Sage was planted near the edge of the fire pit area, adding a splash of color and texture.
      • Boulders and River Rock were strategically placed to add dimension and create visual interest.

Low voltage lighting was installed between the patio sections to enhance the ambiance during the evenings, and the entire area was finished with a layer of mulch to create a clean, polished look.

Revealing the Transformation

Once the project was completed, it was time to show Kim and Matt their new outdoor space. We wanted to see their reaction to the lantern and the overall design.

The lantern, with its warm glow and sentimental value, was a hit. Kim and Matt appreciated the story behind it and how it added a personal touch to their backyard.

Interestingly, the landing area, which wasn’t initially a part of the design, became their favorite feature. They found it perfect for everyday use and enjoyed its cozy and functional design.

Kim and Matt were excited to host a big birthday party, marking the start of many enjoyable gatherings in their new outdoor space.

Final Costs and Summary

The project initially cost $30,750, covering landscaping, a 6×12 foot landing with five lights, 575 square feet of pavers, four path lights, and one uplight. Additional labor for installing the pergola and a color-changing light beneath the maple tree brought the total to $32,025.

In the end, Kim and Matt’s backyard was transformed into a versatile and inviting space, perfect for entertaining, relaxing, and enjoying the great outdoors. This project not only improved their home but also demonstrated how thoughtful design and a touch of creativity can turn a simple backyard into a cherished retreat.

So, if you’re dreaming of an outdoor transformation, remember: it’s not just about the materials or design—it’s about creating a space where you can build memories and truly enjoy life outside. Get inspired, and let your backyard be a place of joy and relaxation!
