What’s Going On at the Virginia Zoo?

What’s going on at the Virginia Zoo in Norfolk? Well, there’s always a lot happening…and this time, we have something to do with it! This current space we are working on is the old entrance to the Sea Lion exhibit, which no longer exists. Clearly, the area is overgrown and needs some work, which is where we’re stepping in!

Working at the Virginia Zoo is different than in a traditional backyard. We set out to employ a technique called bio mimicry…

This means that, as much as possible, we are trying to replicate the systems that already exist in nature rather than creating a brand new one that might not feel like home to the turtles who are going to live here. Using a combination of concrete fabric, wetland filters throughout a series of 10 ponds and water features, and a pier to divide the space, we want all the tortoises and other animals who live here to feel invited, welcomed, and encouraged to continue living life outdoors.
